Davon as Marlon
Jennelle as Paris Grether as Nicole Suhaill as Lindsay Three girls are talking at a café. They are waiting on their male friend. He comes up and they get quiet. Marlon What’s up? You all look nice today. What were ya’ll just talkin’ about? Nicole Oh, nothing. Lindsay At least nothing that concerns you. The three girls laugh. Paris Sit us down, will you? Marlon Why I got to sit ya’ll down? Ya’ll got legs, don’t ya’ll? Marlon sits the girls down. Marlon I know why ya’ll want me to sit ya’ll. It’s cause I’m black, isn’t it? The girls ignore Marlon. Marlon has a seat and the waiter comes over with four menus. Marlon Hey, can I get some baby back ribs with some extra BBQ sauce. Oh yeah, and a coke. The girls look at Marlon in offense. Paris I would like a steamed lobster and a glass of red wine. Lindsay You can get me some lasagna with some classy white wine. Nicole I would like a steak, medium rare, with a glass of champagne. Make sure it’s a clean glass, will you? Lindsay And could you give me some white bread with that lasagna, dear? Nicole Oh, me too. I would also like some white bread with my meal. I don’t like dark wheat bread. The orders are all delivered. Marlon Marlondigs into his ribs. Sauce smears all over his face and meat get stuck between his teeth. The girls look at him in disgust. Oh, my bad. Did ya’ll want some? Marlon picks up the ribs with his hands and offers his friends some. Paris That’s disgusting. No, we don’t want any. Lindsay Use a napkin, Hun. Have you no manners? Marlon Why ya’ll actin’ like dat? Ordering all those fancy foods and lookin’ at me all funny? Are ya’ll tryin to embarrass me or sumthin? I know, it’s because I’m black, isn’t it. Everyone finish their meals then leaves the café. As they walk down the street, Nicole drops her purse. She starts to bend over to get it but doesn’t. Nicole Marlon, could you be a sweetheart and pick that up for me? Marlon Why can’t you get it? It’s you’re purse. Paris She said please, Marlon. Marlon Okay, but I know why you want me to get it. It’s cause I’m black. Marlon picks up the purse and gives it to Nicole. Then they all wait on the bus. The bus comes and they get on. There are three seats in the front. Lindsay Let us sit up front, Marlon. We have to stick together. The girls hold hands. Paris There’s a seat in the back of the bus. Hurry before someone gets it. Marlon I get it. Ya’ll want me to sit in the back anyways. It’s because I’m black. Well I’m standing right here, in the front. Ya’ll been actin’ racist towards me all evening. Nicole Racist? We weren’t acting racist. You’ve just been acting very immature. Marlon Well, how do you explain wanting me to sit in the back, when ya’ll wanted me to pull the seats out for ya’ll at the restaurant, and when you wanted me to pick up your purse? Nicole It’s called being a gentleman. Marlon Well, what about when ya’ll was lookin’ at me all funny when I was ordering regular black people food? Lindsay We weren’t acting funny. And there is nothing wrong with ribs. We just didn’t like the way you were presenting yourself. You were acting unprofessional. Marlon Then why were you whispering about me when I first arrived? Paris We weren’t talking about you. It was just girl stuff. You know, stuff guys wouldn’t want to hear about before they eat? Nicole And it had nothing to do with you being black. After all, we are Latinas. Marlon Oh, I’m sorry. I guess I was just being ignorant. Nicole, Paris, and Nicole Guys usually are!

INT-DINING ROOM-NIGHT
BRANDON and his friend KEISHA sit at the dinner table. BRANDON So Keisha, are you enjoying dinner? KEISHA Yeah, it’s okay. But… BRANDON But what? KEISHA It feels like there’s something missing. BRANDON What, what’s missing? Brandon’s MOM and DAD come downstairs with pajamas on. INT-STAIRWAY-NIGHT MOM Watch out for that step! DAD Which step? DAD’s foot crashes through the rotted step. DAD O yeah. That step. Brandon’s parents enter the kitchen. While scratching his buttocks with one hand, DAD open’s the refrigerator with the other, takes out a gallon of milk, takes a gulp, and offers KEISHA a swig. Reluctantly, KEISHA reaches for the milk. BRANDON Ump-um! KEISHA looks at BRANDON. KEISHA No… No thank-you. MOM reaches out and takes the milk jug. MOM Where are your manners?! MOM wipes off the milk jug top with the hem of her dress then extends it back out to KEISHA. BRANDON stops KEISHA again as she appears to accept the invitation to the milk, gets up, rushes over to her, and takes her by the hand. BRANDON You know what? Why don’t we go watch some TV? KEISHA Well, okay. KEISHA looks at MOM, DAD and the gallon of milk one more time then follows BRANDON. INT-LIVING ROOM-NIGHT BRANDON and KEISHA scurries into the living room. Keisha flops on a coach while BRANDON turns off the light. BRANDON What do you want to watch? KEISHA Let’s watch something educational. Let’s watch this documentary. BRANDON looks at KEISHA seriously, then looks at the documentary of an old lady on TV. BRANDON This is a date, not a school or library. BRANDON grabs the remote, and turns the channel to a horror movie. KEISHA grabs the remote and turn back. They tug the remote back and forth. MOM and DAD walk in with popcorn and the gallon of milk. MOM We’re not watching a horror movie or a documentary. We’re watching Brandon’s baby videos. MOM puts in a tape of Brandon’s first potties in the VCR. DAD I remember this! You missed the toilet, peed on the floor and fell right in it. MOM Oooh, Oooh! This is the one where you pooped in the crib and thought it was a monster. KEISHA, MOM, and DAD dig into the popcorn bag and take a handful. BRANDON Turn that off! Don’t show her this! BRANDON gets up, walks over to KEISHA and takes her by the hand. BRANDON Let’s go to my room where we can have some privacy. KEISHA Well, okay. KEISHA takes a handful of popcorn and a last glimpse at the movie. DAD Last call on the milk. KEISHA smiles and follows BRANDON up the stairs. INT-STAIRWAY-NIGHT BRANDON stomps up the stairs and his foot crashes through the broken step. He pulls it out and keeps walking. BRANDON Watch out for that step! KEISHA Which step? KEISHA’s foot crashes through the same step. KEISHA Oh, that step. KEISHA pulls her foot out. BRANDON grabs her arm and takes her to his room. INT-BRANDON’S BEDROOM-NIGHT BRANDON pulls KEISHA into his room and closes and locks the door. He sits her on the bed and sits besides her. BRANDON My parents are always trying to show off. Let’s finish this date before they come interrupt us again. BRANDON closes his eyes, puckers up his lips and leans toward KEISHA. KEISHA Is there something wrong with your lips? They look wrinkled. BRANDON opens his eyes and looks at KEISHA blankly. BRANDON No. there’s nothing wrong with my lips. I’m trying to kiss you. KEISHA Oooooh… Why? BRANDON This is a date isn’t it? Couples usually kiss after their date. KEISHA Ooooooh… Why didn’t you just say so? BRANDON The dinner, the movie the conversation. I was going to tell you if it weren’t for my idiotic parents following us everywhere. KEISHA Oh. Well I already had a date with you before. I thought you wanted me to meet your parents this time. MOM and DAD burst through the door. DAD The door too? Everything around here is broke. MOM We were wondering where you guys wondered off to. KEISHA Sorry, Brandon. I thank you for the food, and small talk, but you aren’t my type. You’re too stuck up and weird. You need to loosen up. BRANDON WHAT!! STUCK UP?? WEIRD?? HOW!! KEISHA Your parents have a sense of humor. They know how to have fun… They are what were missing. I’d rather go on another date and hang out with them. BRANDON stands puzzled and confused while his girlfriend goes downstairs to have ‘fun’ with his parents. |
